THE CAMPAIGN AND THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY

GREETINGS FROM A PROFESSIONAL POLITICO!

I'm sorry I've been AWOL here for more than 2 months.....there was this little thing called a campaign going on. I had the pleasure of being a Deputy Field Director for the President's Re-Election Campaign, as Senior Member of the Akron Strike Team, "The A-Team Wolf Pack". In my job description, I was not allowed to socialize or post any internet things during the Campaign, so as to avoid all problems, such as opposition trolls trying to link things to the President. But that directive is over, and I am free to socialize, post and blog now. So here I am.

I want to tell you how wonderful of a time during the Campaign. My teammates were among the nicest and most awesome people I have ever know. I truly have a new platoon of lifetime friends. I have gown and learned so much, and gained so much, from having know these people and working with them. We all had the pleasure of driving up the margins in Northeast Ohio, so high, that Mr. Romney wouldn't have a snowballs chance in hell of being elected. In the end, we won Northeast Ohio by 14 points! Had we only won it by 13 points, we would have lost Ohio, and we would have had President Elect Romney, since I believe that Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Florida would have also flipped.

On election night I was fully satisfied for one of the first times in  my life. I was going to be okay, no matter what the outcome. For, I knew that I had done EVERYTHING I could have possibly done to ensure the re-election of POTUS, Barack Obama. I was completely and utterly spent! I left everything on the field! I had absolutely nothing left in the tank. I have never worked so hard in all my life. We were a well oiled machine going into GOTV (Get Out The Vote, Sat, Sun, Mon, and election day). During those last 4 days, I did double duty, as a Blue Team Captain, AND lead Canvasser. We had three shifts, during each one, after getting all my canvassers trained, equiped and out the door, I set out with my own walk lists. Only, I didn't walk them, I ran them....seriously! I ran between each targeted house. That way I got back to the staging location, mine was the main office in Lorain, Ohio. I didn't miss a beat. All my packets were passed as required, in fact I achieved 215% of all my assigned goals.  I typically walked and ran a combined 8-12 miles a day, for the past 9 months, but the last 2 weeks it was bumped up to 12-15 miles daily, and during GOTV, over 20 miles. Four Stop and Go Marathons, on my calibrated pedometer.

I was informed I was the top Campaigner in the State of Ohio, measuring several metrics. Most new voters registered, most doors knocked, most early vote commit cards, most conversations, most volunteers recruited, most volunteer shifts filled, most GOTV shifts filled, and most miles covered. I've been doing this every year since I was 12 years old back in 1975 helping my Mom work on Governor Jimmy Carter's campaign. I've knocked on over 350,000 doors, most of them volunteering for free. It was nice to this year be compensated, and be recognized for the professional I am. I think I inspired many on my team to step it up, and to be their best as well. We had a good number of fantastic people with fantastic productivity. My team alone is responsible for gaining more than 50,000 votes that otherwise would not have existed. All the teams in Ohio accounted for an additional 250,000 votes, which just happens to be the margin of victory in Ohio. And we all know, AS GOES OHIO, SO GOES THE NATION!  No Republican has ever won the Presidency without winning Ohio. We were all determined never to let that happen, including THIS MORMON!

I had a wonderful angle when talking to constituents. I would often say, "I wouldn't vote for Mitt Romney if he were my Ward Bishop!" That line usually got a broad smile and a laugh. I was so proud to see and witness that the vast majority of anti-Mormon bigotry comes from the right. I didn't witness a single individual  that judged me harshly for being a Mormon, or a single Obama supporter that thought of Romney as the standard bearer of the Church. However, had Romney won, I firmly believe he would have brought shame and disgust upon the Church, and done much to Turn Souls from investigating or coming to Church. It was interesting that in no place that Romney has ever lived believes in him or trusts him. Massachusetts is pissed off he lied to them to get himself elected Governor. It's quite clear why he pulled a Sarah Palin, and decided not to run for re-election. Michigan despises him for denigrating the auto industry, and being a Chinese patsy. Even the Salt Lake newspaper endorsed Obama, when they could have remained neutral...that should tell everyone a lot.

To wrap up this post I want to say how much my life has been enriched by this Campaign. THIS CAMPAIGN HAS CHANGED MY LIFE! I am so much a better person because of it. I came out to hundreds of people, all of them openly accepted me, and gave me hugs and affection. I am more affirmed as a transgender woman, as a Transsexual, in fact. I gained so much confidence in myself. I know I can do anything. I know great things and great people are out there for me to discover. I will be knocked down, but I will always get up again, and be thankful and grateful for the experience I had on the Akron Strike team 2012, helping Obama get re-elected. We were the #TipOfTheSpear  and we pulled it off. Election night was among the happiest most euphoric times of my life. I am determined not to let this experience slip through my fingers. I have plans to seek a position on the inauguration committee, and a later job with the Administration or Government.  I AM SO EXITED FOR THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY!!!!!

Life Is Good, LIFE IS GREAT!
Peace Out!  Love To All!
Your Friend, Leah

  5. Leanorah,

You are amazing! Your energy as a campaigner is truly remarkable. I hope you do get a great job doing more of what you do so well.

I've been reading your blog. Life has been hard on you, but you are coming through. I'm glad that you have come out to so many people especially to those you have worked with. Having done so should make disclosures of your transsexuality potentially less damaging to your career and daily living situation.

I know how hard it is to have a family that doesn't understand or support you especially when you love them as much as you do.

Confession: I voted for Romney because I thought he could cut our budget judiciously and attract corporation back to America.

Personally I think that his main problem was running as a Republican.

The Republican party, especially the Tea Party and the strict anti-abortion Catholics and blatantly anti-Mormon, anti-universal health care supposedly Christian Eangelicals, has become just about impossible for me to be a part of.

I've been a Republican all my life, but in the election before this one, I voted across the board Democrat. Having to deal with people who think abortions are NEVER OK, with people who think our health system before OBAMA Care was the best in the world, that Hispanic immigrants who risk their lives to flee from countries dominated by drug-lords, ridiculously wealthy and heartless elites that don't see that water purification systems, sewage treatment systems, schools, electricity, and roads serve all the people, that think that any form of taxation is tyranny even with representation, that raising funds for worthy goals through taxation and cooperation among members of both parties in Congress is a socialist/Robin Hood plot to take from the rich to give to the poor has become practically impossible for me anymore.

Romney was a pioneer in universal health care. Massachusetts universal health care system WAS Gov. Romney's greatest achievement as governor. To have to denounce OBAMA Care, which was clearly modeled after the Massachusetts Health System in order to appeal to ignorant, heartless, all-for-me grass-roots Republicans, must have generated some serious cognitive dissonance. Also, not supporting the idea that persons with incomes in the upper 1 or 2% should not pay more to support the country than poorer people seemed ludicrous to me.

By the way, the Salt Lake Tribune is consistently anti-Mormon and anti-Republican. It doesn't surprise me at all that it came out in support of Obama.

I think your efforts in Ohio were amazing. I'm actually glad that Romney didn't win. I just hope that some cooperation between Republicans and Democrats will take place so that we can really solve the problems that the country will be facing.

    1. It's great to hear from you Jim! Thank you for taking the time to read my blog, and thanks for taking the time to comment. I am thankful for people such as yourself, someone not ideologically aligned with me, that is willing to reach out to me in kindness and encouragement. That you would honor and validate the work that I do reflects a lot back on you as a remarkable person, one that I would want to remain friends with.

I'm with you in that I don't understand why so many Mormons want to get into bed with a bunch of cliquish and clannish folks (The Radical Religious Right)that hate our guts. I would reach out to them ecumenically, but not politically. I think a tipping point is being reached with many Mormons (at least the ones outside Utah)that remaining active in a party that leaps to the right every election is becoming untenable.

I appreciate your candor, and your willingness to validate me. I hope you will consider stopping back once in a while. You're always welcome to add comments, ask questions, or offer suggestions. I hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving.

      Peace and Love,
      Leah

  6. Leah,

I've enjoyed getting to know you these last few months. You are an educational surprise to me in so many ways.

Politically, I was a republican until 2008, and I quit the party based on tax policy. Crazy, I know, but I could not understand balancing the budget on the backs of the poor and middle class in order to give greater tax breaks to those to whom it would make absolutely no difference and create zero jobs (as everyone who actually measures things confirm).

It was the night of my first anguished democrat vote that I watched something awful: a sea of candles in California where our Mormon efforts and money had just stripped good folks of equal protection of the law. I had known we were doing something out there, I just hadn't had any reason to figure out what. I was heart-broken. Why did anyone listen to the Mormons on that?? Couldn't they tell that the Mormons were wrong and that we should treat each other the same in the civil law?

This 2012 election choice was easier for me. Mitt made no attempt to defend equal pay for women, opportunity for the Spanish population, his immigration policy was "I've got mine and I don't care about you", he spoke up in the wrong direction on women's health and physical autonomy when I felt he should know better and I disliked that enormously. Mitt could have been a contender for my vote but he actively chose positions that I found disgraceful, and I mourned it.

You know, I grew up in Ohio. I am glad to see you changing it and being affirmed by it. Hopefully someday that will even include the northwest corner of it, Bowling Green, my old home town. For now, I am very grateful for your work. Some very bright person thought of a plan to the white house that did not involve always-crapped-up Florida and Ohio came through for us all.

    1. Hello Kuato! Thank you for following me, and thank you for taking the time to write a comment. I don't think anybody has described me as an educational surprise before. That sounds pretty neat, but what does it mean?

Do you live in California now, or at least somewhere out West, where I would be jealous of? I totally agree with you, 2008 even though I worked my tail off on that campaign, was a huge disappointment, shame and disgrace, for myself, my country, California, my Church, and Conservatives. I could not celebrate like I did this time when OHIO put Obama over the top, and EVERY State that voted on it voted in favor of marriage equality, including my home State of Washington. I hope the Church realized its mistake and that they were on the WRONG and bigoted side of history (which does not bend toward RE-gression, and the diminishment of rights).

Thanks again for adding to my blog, we are all enriched for having you here, please, come back soon.

      Always,
      Leah

  7. Are you treated as a male or female by the church? Do you hold the priesthood? Was it taken from you when you transitioned? Were you baptized as a transgender? Do you attend RS?

    1. Mike, all good questions, and I thank you for them. My transitioning started in June of this year, as it was then I finally decided to accept myself for who I've always known myself to be. I have not, as of yet entered the phase of transition where I present as, and live as a woman full time. This process was it static mode while I was on the campaign, and may yet have to be put on the back burner as I pursue other options in my field of work. One thing is certain, I will not regress, any holding off on my transitioning process will be strictly temporary, as I know that I am a woman, and that part of me will not be denied for much longer. Full transition is my only healthy option. To address your questions; I am treated as a male in the Church and I present as male. I hold the priesthood, and have not fully transitioned so it has not been taken away. I do not relish it being taken from me, nor do I think it valid that it should be. I believe women can and do hold the priesthood (or priestesshood)and always have. I was born and raised in the Church. I knew that I was female at 4, but I was not baptized transgender. I do not attend Relief Society. I want to thank you for taking the time to ask these questions and I hope you will visit again, as you are always welcome. Always. Leah.
