MY BEST FRIENDS BLOG ON "WHAT SEX AM I", including my original reply

*     So! I have just been informed that my best friend is going through a nightmare right now after being maliciously outed by her oldest son. Her wonderful callings and job are now in jeapardy, and she has been informed to cease her online presence. She is the source of so much of my bravery and courage. She became my friend at a time I was very low. I have learned so much from her and I admire her greatly. I owe the existence of this blog to her. Indeed, I dedicated this blog to her, when I founded it. She is a truly remarkable woman, that I wish everyone had the pleasure of knowing her, like I do. I am a better woman because of her. I hope she will continue to remain my friend, and that she will continue to be a beacon of HOPE, and a VANGUARD of social justice and of Transgender rights, both within the LDS Church and without.  She is my Peaches, my Twin, my big Sissy, my BFF, my BGFF. I love her very much, and I don't want her to disappear.  In that vein, I wish to re-publish one or two of her posts, including my original reply to it. I hope she is okay with this, as I only do this so people know what a magnificent person she is.

HERE IS HER POST AS IT ORIGINALLY APPEARED IN MAY OF THIS YEAR

What Sex Am I Anyway?

So, as I provided a reply the other night to Christian Taylor’s post on Causes of Transexualism, and reread the comments others had shared, it got me thinking more about my own situation, and a desire to share what I know, and what I feel, and what I don’t know as it relates to me.

My journey is not over yet, nor will it be perhaps in this life, and that is where faith comes in. I walk by faith, faith in what I do know, submissive to follow by faith when I don’t know, and striving to learn what I am able to receive. Hence the title of the blog, “Who Am I Really?” That is my journey, to learn more and to find out, if possible.

It seems like for we who are transgender persons the answers are not clear, and that strikes me now as I write it as a monumental understatement. We all want to know, we want clarity, and we need answers. I have benefitted greatly from reading the stories and feelings of those who have advanced further down this path than I have and have been able to share their understanding of their key questions.

Their answers though are theirs, and I realize mostly pertain to their situation, their make-up, and I sense we may all be a little different in our circumstances. One single answer about gender clearly doesn’t fit all individuals. As I share my feelings and insights, I do so that it may help me see it all more clearly by writing, that it may be of some benefit to the reader, but I do not presuppose that my answers are absolute or pertain at all to someone else. We each need to find the truth as it pertains to our situation. I am sure my writings can feel somewhat strident at times, and I guess they are for me and me alone, but are shared with the kindest of offerings to anyone who wishes to read.

So, let me consider my sex categorically: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual.
First physical, I was born with “normal” male genitalia, although smaller than average (which makes wearing fitted woman’s jeans no problem at all J). So I was assigned “male” gender at birth.

I was pondering the whole physical sex characteristics subject a while back and got the clear impression that I needed to research chromosomal abnormalities, particularly XXY. I did and learned that 47XXY or Kleinfelter’s Syndrome, although not directly linked to Transexualism from what I have read, did ring really true to me in several ways.

From the Wikipedia article on the topic, the description of the physical traits of Kleinfelter’s at each stage of life, perfectly described me at each phase in the most stunning detail and accuracy, to the point that I was shocked at how closely, here it is:

“As babies and children, XXY males may have weaker muscles and reduced strength. As they grow older, they tend to become taller than average. They may have less muscle control and coordination than other boys their age. (I was the poster child for this description).
During puberty, the physical traits of the syndrome become more evident; because these boys do not produce as much testosterone as other boys, they have a less muscular body, less facial and body hair, and broader hips. (Again me to a tee). As teens, XXY males may have larger breasts, weaker bones, and a lower energy level than other boys.

By adulthood, XXY males look similar to males without the condition, although they are often taller. In adults, possible characteristics vary widely and include little to no signs of affectedness, a lanky, youthful build and facial appearance, or a rounded body type with some degree of gynecomastia (increased breast tissue). (I am often mistaken by my facial appearance as a male some 5 to 10 years younger than I am, and have the rounded form and increased breast tissue).

The term hypogonadism in XXY symptoms is often misinterpreted to mean "small testicles" or "small penis". In fact, it means decreased testicular hormone/endocrine function. Because of this (primary) hypogonadism, individuals will often have a low serum testosterone level but high serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels. Despite this misunderstanding of the term, however, it is true that XXY men may also have microorchidism (i.e. small testicles).” (Fortunately for me and my family I did not suffer from complete infertility which is common among those with Kleinfelter’s, I was able to father four of our five children, but I admittedly had a sex drive way below that of average males).

I noted the fact that those with Kleinfelter’s often grew taller than those in their family, and that in my case I grew far earlier than other boys. I reached my full height (almost 73”) before I was 13, and stopped cold, never growing any more. I recall my Mother pointing out that was exactly how SHE grew. Looking back it appears to me that the XX chromosomes governed the pace of my growth and early puberty, with the XY taking over only much later, just an observation on my part. (I will come back to how these physical attributes affected me emotionally in a minute).

I have no test results confirming Kleinfelter’s, but sufficient similarities to make it very plausible, and I feel contributory to my transgender self.

Now sorry to get so detailed, but here goes. Stimulation of my nipples and breasts often causes secretion of breast milk, which I understand is not impossible for a biological male. The amazing thing early one Saturday morning was being awoken by our toddler-age granddaughter who had spent the night, as she was crying at the door to our room; I woke, and realized my shirt was wet from my right breast lactating in spontaneous response to her hungry cry. That is the closest I have come to feeling physically like a mother, and it was privately marvelous! Mind, hearing and physiology got together on that one.

One more physical cue, I read somewhere that men and women’s arms are not structured the same, if you stand and face the mirror with palms to the front, men’s arms are straight and women’s angle out some 15 degrees at the elbows, I went to the mirror upon reading that and sure enough, mine angled out. Supposedly that facilitates holding a child, etc., whichever, I do have it too, and it explains why my arm swing when I walk has always felt so uncontrollably feminine!

Now emotional, this is of course highly subjective and personal but there are a few worthwhile insights. First, I strongly feel that my physical attributes mentioned above strongly impacted how people perceived me and in turn how I learned to perceive myself (particularly my parents, as I will describe below, but of course there were many others). Second, as I described in my recent post about movies, my emotional nature is to be tenderhearted and overly sensitive, more on that in a minute.

I have thought back often on how my parents responded to the child I was and the impact of their responses from my current vantage point. My father was strong, athletic; overachieving at whatever competitive thing he did, including all sports. He worked in his younger days in a job that was heavy testosterone driven requiring brute strength. He swore, occasionally drank in excess, and made no apology for his flagrant use of pornography. He named me after himself (cross reference that sad fact against my post on “What is in a Name?”)

His often stated vision for me was that I would grow up to be just like him, start working with him in his shop as a teen and eventually partner with him in his business. (None of which ever happened).

I was so unlike him in so many ways it is too much to enumerate. I was hopelessly uncoordinated and generally uninterested in participation in sports of any kind. My sisters on the other hand were very strong and athletic, so he coached them for years, dragging me along to make me watch how much they pleased him.

I could not please him. He would take me fishing which I hated, he would fish I would sketch the landscape until it grew dark. Eventually he stopped taking me fishing, but he would go alone.

He was a hard, overt and critical man. Always a business owner, he could never keep an employee, he was too demanding, so he just did all the work himself. Even from my earliest days I can remember being tested by him at every turn, if I passed, I received his curt approval, if I failed, I witnessed his unbridled disdain.

This sounds tough, but I do not exaggerate, he was and is the toughest person to be in a room with of anyone I have ever known.

Bottom line I could never be the man he wanted me to be, when I did things that were less than manly, there was only disapproval.

To counterbalance that difficult parent-child relationship, my dear Mother was kind and charitable to a fault, but she knew how to stand her ground against the man she married, and she knew how to protect her children, with fury if necessary. She taught me so much of what I know about being kind and helpful and giving and being willing to sacrifice.

She also taught me some other interesting things. Looking back I hear the steady drumbeat of her whispering to me (sometimes figuratively or subliminally, often verbally) that I MUST NOT be like my father.

She made sure I realized that his attitudes, his treatment of others, all his mannerisms, and even his employment were things I must not repeat, that I could and must do better. (Several others that knew my Dad well also reinforced those same sentiments). Mom gave me the courage to make my own choices and to be strong enough to be different, to go a different way and to suit what life meant to me. (Even the courage I suppose to be a transgender person and a Latter-day Saint!)

So what do I take from that? Emotionally for as long as I remember I was told to not be like the only male I was ever around in our immediate family. I spent my whole growing up years, trying not to displease my father while doing all I could to distance everything about myself from how he was. Perhaps I overreacted, but combined with the other characteristics I am describing, this strong emotional drive to not be like him, I feel contributed heavily to my predisposition to not want to be male or anything like male at all. My nurture, if you could call it that, was like a perfect storm when combined with my physical and mental make-up.

One more random emotional issue, that may have bearing, may not. My sisters were born right after me and only 13 months apart from each other, my mother suddenly found herself caring for three under three, and with a husband who had no involvement in child care. When she pushed back and demanded that there needed to be some way that I as a three year old could go outside and play so she could tend to the babies, my father’s solution (being both overly controlling and paranoid that something bad would happen to me) was to take me outside, tie one end of a rope tightly around my waist and the other end to the tree in the front yard and leave me there to play in the dirt. This began when I was three, and thankfully I have no recollection of it. (My Grandmother explained it to my wife one day when I wasn’t around). What I do remember is from about age five on I played under that tree, day after day without ever venturing to other parts of our yard; I had been well trained to obey.

My relationship with my parents while I lived in their home is just an example of how the response of others to me emotionally affected how I felt about myself.

On the brighter side I suppose it is my nature to be sensitive and tenderhearted and compassionate. These are positive emotional attributes I believe. However I have been taunted all my life from a young age for my sensitivity. In addition to the movies, any other emotional event would affect me in very powerful ways.

For example, while other boys played Army and used action figures, I would see those early TV images of the Vietnam War each night on the news and go to my room and cry myself to sleep, it was so disturbing. In fact I made quite a scene the only time I can remember in my first 12 years visiting another boy’s house, he had his army men all out and ready to play and I refused, I would not do that, we got into quite an argument over it (we were five at the time!), our mothers had to stop us, and we went home, no more going over to boy’s houses for me!

On the other hand whenever I was out of my father’s sight, I loved to play with Barbies or play dress up with my sisters, and I was always in a feminine role, never a masculine. It felt right and I never thought otherwise, but I knew not to get caught doing it.

Next, mental; maybe mental and emotional are too nearly the same to be separate categories, but I have a reason to separate them, I wanted to get the emotional stuff out of the way so I could focus on how my mind works and feels.

I feel I have the brain of a woman. I always have felt that way, but have learned that there actually are measurable structural differences. It would have been so much easier for me to think and act and like the things other boys did, or that my Dad constantly proffered. I was set in my mind that I would not do things boys did, I did not like things boys did, and I did not play rough, or break things or hurt things for the fun of doing it. I could always stop and wonder why I would do such things. I became quite defiant about it.

Rather I did my drawings, and paintings, and knitting and hook rugs, and macramé and tended flowers, and the garden, and got into photography and all kinds of crafts. I read books and daydreamed endlessly. Oh, how I loved to daydream about my future life and family and children! As a child I had constant fantasies and kept myself entertained for hours telling myself stories and pretending. It was in these activities that I felt like me, that I felt a release and felt whole and I knew the difference!

From the link in Christian’s article to the tsroadmap, it says the following: “In conclusion, transexualism is strongly associated with the neurodevelopment of the brain.”

In her post and the replies to it discussion occurs regarding the effect of DES use on expectant mothers to minimize the risk of miscarriage during the postwar timeframe and up to 1970. I was born at the time when DES was in peak use, before it began to be challenged. I have no specific record yet of it being administered to my Mom, but its use and subsequent fallout was very prevalent in the area of the country where I was born.

Apparently the use of DES also yielded a high occurrence of left handed children, as I have mentioned elsewhere I am left handed too. I have always seen my left handedness as an indication that my mind is wired differently from others, I can only imagine how very differently!

In my reply to Christian’s post, I also described how much stress my dear mother was under in at least the first and second trimesters of the pregnancy, when so much of fetal brain development occurs. It seems clear that is potentially a contributing factor as well.

Finally spiritual, this is the category that I cannot just remember and can’t put into a balance and weigh. At some future day I will know the answers, so as I said at the beginning in this I walk by faith not yet knowing.

However, consistent with the principle found in Doctrine and Covenants 130:18, “Whatever principle of intelligence we attain unto in this life, it will rise with us in the resurrection”, turning it around some, because I feel that my brain is decidedly female, and the attributes (or principles of intelligence to align with the scripture) I have and am developing here will go with me into the next life, I am trusting that they will be in righteous harmony with my spirit in the next life. Or said a different way for me to be congruous I can only feel right if my spirit and mind are aligned and it is my body that is out of synch in this life.

Or said another way still, who I am IS my thoughts and feelings (all decidedly female) it is what is in my head and heart, that is who I will be when I leave this mismatched body behind through the process of temporal death.

I have often wondered how I will resurrect. I have trust in a merciful God who will make me beautiful and right in that day, with all parts congruous. I believe that will be my reward because of Jesus Christ. I know in that day it will be His will and not mine that will be done, and I would not consider debating the outcome with him. I am trying to learn to trust Him enough that I will be aligned with whatever His will is. But as I read the scriptures, it causes me to feel peace that I am on track and developing the thoughts and feelings that are right for me, and therefore I sense that I have a beautiful female spirit going through a difficult mortal challenge for a wise purpose that He understands and that someday I will too!

In conclusion, I feel like I have an intersex condition, perhaps not traditional in every sense of the definition, but to me it feels intersex none the less. I am not male or female totally, but I feel that my emotional, mental and spiritual self is female, while housed in this life in an atypical male body, that the world sees and assigns as male. In other words, I am a transgender person.

I hope that this has not been too personal, I feel like I am really way out on the limb with all this detail, but it has been so helpful to think it through and write it all down.

If you made it this far without skipping, thanks for reading! Love, Laurie.

    1. Sure enough, hopefully I didn't cross the line. However if it is food for thought, enjoy the feast!
  2. My Dear Precious Laurie,
This was a beautiful post, even though I'm reading it 2 months later. We've only known each other less than a month, so you'd been well into this stuff by then.

As you know by now, I relate to virtually everything you spoke about in your childhood. Massive effects the Vietnam War had on me took a toll on my emotions too. Hearing Uncle Walt every night start by saying,"Today in Saigon....." My Kindergarten techer wrote on my report cards (that I recently looked at) stated, "Bobby likes to wear dresses during pretend. He takes the girls role, and would rather play with the girls. When he draws, he is often crying, and when he draws military pictures they are sad, not patriotic. Bobby is being affected by the War in an unhealthy way, and may need help in coping. Bobby is a dreamer. Bobby is always helping and more concerned with the success of others above himself". She was telling my folks basically, "your son is actually your daughter" I still remember the kids I was helping all the time. I was a loving and nurturing little girl, that gad no care for personal success or competition.

The fishing thing is totally the same with me. My dad always wanted to take me fishing, but I really hated it. I hated everything about it. Sitting around waiting for something to happen seemed so stupid. The gross worms and hooks, and killing animals was all very unappealing to me. Getting hooked in the fave will contribute to ones dislike of fishing as well.

As for sports, I guess we are different. I believe strongly I am XXY chromosomed, but for different, and some similar reasons. I was small and delicate until at 14 it was decided I was going through female puberty. 7 years of poison T was administered to me to force an unnatural male puberty onto me. Even with the poison T, it took till age 19 to have male puberty.

So, I was small and delicate in my youth. My doctor diagnosed me with a heart murmur on top of that! He said, "now Bobby, you probably come in last in your races at school...you wont be able to keep up with them........" My response was, no way, I'm the fastest and the strongest. (well maybe not strongest)I broke all the Elementary and Middle school records for the western arm hang. I played little league baseball, dreaming I was Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, or Reggie Jackson. I even had a bright red Reggie Jackson glove that I still can fit my small feminine hands into, so I still use that and nothing else. I routinely homered and won games in walk-off fashion. But my main love was hockey. Maybe inspired by a Saturday Afternoon Canadian movie about a girl who pretended to be a boy to play hockey. I grew up on the border, and visited Canada every week. Hockey games were on every day and night. I wanted to be a Prima, with the white skates and skirts. But hockey got me on the ice, and it was a true fit. It was just meant to be, to tend goal, and stop all those boys dreams of ever being a hero. Turns out I was good enough to play competitively for 19 years, but not my dream of the NHL, like Ken Dryden.

I like how you went through all the aspects of ones self as being the proof that you are really a woman. I am convinced. You are a woman.

Thank you for this post. There is quite a lot of helpful information here. And quite a lot of insight into your personality and the real you. Me Likey!

Hugs and Kisses for a Dear Sissy,

ON BEING A CRY BABY AND FINDING CLOSURE

So you think I'm a cry baby? Well you might be right. I just might be a baby too. I'm a thumb sucker and have overactive bladder, sometimes needing pads. But, that's another post for some other day. I've taken notice lately of the fact that I recently have taken to crying at the drop of a dime. I have been extremely emotional of late. I don't know what to make of it, but I can say I have never felt better in my entire life.

Back in the Summer of 2001, at my Father's funeral (he died of Prostate Cancer at 63), a couple of things of note took place. This was the culmination of a devastating period of time for my family. Just a few years prior, my Mother died at age 54 from myriad untreated issues relating to diabetes, high blood pressure, angina, strokes and brain annuerisms, obesity and heart disease. For one reason or another, my Mother fell through the cracks of the American Health Care System, which I utterly despise, and have not a darn good thing to say about it. Just a few years prior to that, my dear 14 year old sister, Amy, took her own life, with my dads 22 pistol. My brother having heard the shot, ran in to hold her head, his fingers slipping into the wound, must have been something awful that I cannot imagine. My Family was going through utter Hell. My little sister had lost her closest sister in age, when she was 13, her Mom when she 15, and kicked out of the house by her new (and Evil) step-mom at 17, and her Dad at 19. She has gone through so much more than I have. I can't comprehend those things happening to me.

During my Father's funeral, one of his most loyal clients (he was a Barber) spoke, "Pete was a man who lived his life without GUILE!" That was the first thing of remarkable note. It didn't dawn on me that it was notable until THIS YEAR! I now realize that that is the greatest and most wonderful words that could ever be uttered about someone at their funeral. To live a life without lies, without hiding the truth, without being a fake human being. I realized I am guilty of all those things, if I were to remain closeted, as "Bob". Bob is not bad, but he is an utter lie, a disguise, facade, a completely fake human being. My Salvation would be in dire jeopardy if I were to life my life out as Bob. I know this for absolute certainty with all my heart. For I know that I am a woman, I am Leah, and I have known this since age 4. I have gotten many reaffirming witnesses that I am Female and that my spirit is also female. I must throw off this armor of GUILE THAT KILLS THE SOUL AND DIMINISHES THE HUMANITY OF A PERSON. I really would be honored if someone spoke at my funeral, "Leah was a woman who lived her life without GUILE! She got a late start, but she made the best of her situation." That is all I want. That is what I aspire to do.

Secondly, the thing of note, happened after the funeral, at the dinner. My brother remarked to me, "Man, I don't know how you keep it together. You go through all these funerals so stalwart, so stiff upper lipped, like a rock! I admire you, how you hold it together. I can't believe how you delivered three eulogies, and never broke down, never teared up. You are amazing bro!"  That made me full of myself at the time, even though I knew I had accomplished a good piece of acting. My insides were wanting nothing more than to break down in uncontrollable sobbing. I was an emotional, but very well hidden, wreck. Again, not till this year, did I come to realize that this statement has contributed to my "Coming Out" Epiphany. I have wanted to cry all my life. Inside, in my heart, I am always crying, always teary and emotional and very delicate. I am a decidedly delicate soul, and although I may appear to be holding it together, I am devastated by hurt and loss, and lovelorn. Without any planning or effort, I have recently noticed a new ability that I heretofore have never had. They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks...but let me tell you, I never had this in any bag of tricks, ever. I have gained some continuity of emotions between my brain, my mind, my spirit, soul, heart, and now finally, my body. My body no longer flatly denies me the ability to let my emotions flow. This has been a godsend for me. I can be my true self, and begin to heal myself.

This past Saturday, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend a most solemn and spiritual event that memorializes and recognizes the hundreds of murders against Transgender persons annually. This Cleveland event took place with a vigil and march downtown to City Hall, where we gathered inside. As the names of the wonderful GUILELESS people were read, and the place and how they were killed, I began to tear up. Soon I was so emotional, so overcome with the loving truth these souls gave to us and the world, I felt an astounding sense of personal loss. I thought about my sister, Amy, and that I hadn't properly mourned her. It further fueled my tears until an absolute river began to pour out, like never before in my life. I couched downbent over forward in my seat to hide my face. I felt the warm hands of the person next to me, a kind man, and new friend, began to console me in my emotional flow. He helped make this moment one of the most incredible things I have ever felt or experienced. When I got home that night I got online and talked about it, and someone noted that it was a life changing event for me that provided some needed closure. YES, that is exactly what this was.

I like being a cry baby, or at least the ability to cry when I feel like crying. I've never had that before, and I'm not even on hormones yet. Maybe all it took was my commitment to throwing off my guileful life, and beginning to accept my true self. I am happy with the new road I am traveling so far. I'm loving my life. Life is truly great, and I am a Happy girl!

I have attached some photos I took when I got home Saturday night, realizing I forgot to take some up in Cleveland. It didn't seem appropriate at the time. But I never want to forget the feeling I had, and the fact that it was my public debut as Leah. So enjoy a couple more.

I hope you found this enjoyable,
All My Love,    Leah-Loreli

GENDER ROLE TRANSITION & INSIDIOUS SEX/GENDER DISCONTINUITY

I just got through reading Dr.Anne Vitale's 2003 paper on "Gender Role Transition: The Gender Variant Phenomenon".  In it she discusses things that are absolutely dead-on parallels to my life. She explains that we have "Gender Expression Deprivation Anxiety", and that what "Group 3" has is a most "INSIDIOUS SEX AND GENDER DISCONTINUITY". I recognize myself squarely in group 3 (G3). Here is the address for the paper I highly recommend everyone who had any desire to understand what transgender or transsexual individuals go through       http://www.avitale.com/developmentalreview.htm      Highlight this address and go to the site and read the paper, I strongly urge you, if you ever want to understand where I am coming from. I definitely need to bring this paper with me to my Bishop, and have my wife read it when I come out to her.

Virtually everything about this paper's description of me, a member of G3, is spot on. The desires to transition are and always have been and always will increase, and will NEVER wane. It is imparative that I seek "SEX AND GENDER CONTINUITY RESOLUTION", for any hope of a healthy life.

The case descritions could be describing my life. I knew I was a girl at age 4. I didn't know about sex differences until age 6, when my brother was born, because I had innie genitalia, seemingly the same as my sister's. I played dress-up and hopscotch with the girls and avoided the boys entirely. Thankfully I was never beat up spanked or ridiculed for that. I tried to hide my truth (I differ somewhat in that I don't believe I want to or always have had the DESIRE TO BECOME a woman, I believe I am and have always felt I AM A GIRL/WOMAN) and tried to figure the best ways to overcome and hide my true nature. I varied from some G3 by playing sports, especially hockey, and being in ROTC and becoming a soldier. I became solitary, and studious, a bibliophile and geeky. I wanted to date, but didn't know how to go about it. I didn't want sexual relations with a girl, I WANTED TO BE THE GIRL, I WANTED TO BE HER. I hoarded every copy of every girls magazine that was ever published. My Porn was making books of the pictures and articles of teen girls I wanted to be and be like (not have sex with).  Recently, I found a book on finding your true identity, that asks you to make collages of pictures found in magazines as how you see yourself. OMG, I found myself looking through many of those same magazines......I'm a 17 year old girl, for crying out loud. I did that from February to May of this year, and I came out as Transgender and Transsexual to myself and others in June. Coincidence? No Way, it was a major factor, that Journal. "THE ILLUSTRATED DISCOVERY JOURNAL" by Sarah Ban Breathnach.

My sister at 14 years old committing suicide (a victim of bullicide), 20 years ago, when I was 29, and an older student (Senior) at Oregon State University, wreaked havok on my life and my closeted transsexualism. I had been studying Political Psychology and International Relations, as well as taking Women's studies, hoping and praying I would somehow become a girl (there really were no men in any of those classes....the guy in the actual rose-pink colored glasses really was a girl). I most definitely did not do as some G3 women, become a sexist, a homophobe or a transphobe. I was always a strident, and liberal/socialist feminist and total all-out ally to the LGBT community. But it took me 49 years to recognize that I was a full on member of that community. I joined NOW when I was 25, and was very active in the organization while living in Oregon. I was Vice Chair of Benton County Democrats, Vice Chair of Benton County Chapter of NOW, Chair of College Dems and Class President, while interning for Governor Barbara Roberts and State Sen. Frank Roberts and John Kitzhaber. I had high rank in the State Party and was perceived as a rising star. THEN THE SKY FELL! Amy, my favorite sister, like a daughter to me, was gone. I was Dysphoric and untreated, DEPRIVED OF EXPRESSING MY TRUE IDENTITY AND NOW MY CLOSEST SIBLING WAS BULLIED TO DEATH!  I still have not healed and recovered from that. I have not met with any success in living a life as a man trying to make a living in a capitalistic society. I have utterly failed at that in any measure of the word.

We moved to Ohio in 1995 to be close to my wife's family, who quickly disowned me and ostracized me, because they perceived me not successful enough as a capitalistic man. Well excuse me for being neither! Maybe my whole married life has been a lie. I told her that I was a cross-dresser (ostensibly saying I was transgender) on our honeymoon. I need to give her the opportunity to accept or reject me once and for all. That is only fair. More on this later.

Humbly Yours,  Leah

THE CAMPAIGN AND THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY

GREETINGS FROM A PROFESSIONAL POLITICO!

I'm sorry I've been AWOL here for more than 2 months.....there was this little thing called a campaign going on. I had the pleasure of being a Deputy Field Director for the President's Re-Election Campaign, as Senior Member of the Akron Strike Team, "The A-Team Wolf Pack". In my job description, I was not allowed to socialize or post any internet things during the Campaign, so as to avoid all problems, such as opposition trolls trying to link things to the President. But that directive is over, and I am free to socialize, post and blog now. So here I am.

I want to tell you how wonderful of a time during the Campaign. My teammates were among the nicest and most awesome people I have ever know. I truly have a new platoon of lifetime friends. I have gown and learned so much, and gained so much, from having know these people and working with them. We all had the pleasure of driving up the margins in Northeast Ohio, so high, that Mr. Romney wouldn't have a snowballs chance in hell of being elected. In the end, we won Northeast Ohio by 14 points! Had we only won it by 13 points, we would have lost Ohio, and we would have had President Elect Romney, since I believe that Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Florida would have also flipped.

On election night I was fully satisfied for one of the first times in  my life. I was going to be okay, no matter what the outcome. For, I knew that I had done EVERYTHING I could have possibly done to ensure the re-election of POTUS, Barack Obama. I was completely and utterly spent! I left everything on the field! I had absolutely nothing left in the tank. I have never worked so hard in all my life. We were a well oiled machine going into GOTV (Get Out The Vote, Sat, Sun, Mon, and election day). During those last 4 days, I did double duty, as a Blue Team Captain, AND lead Canvasser. We had three shifts, during each one, after getting all my canvassers trained, equiped and out the door, I set out with my own walk lists. Only, I didn't walk them, I ran them....seriously! I ran between each targeted house. That way I got back to the staging location, mine was the main office in Lorain, Ohio. I didn't miss a beat. All my packets were passed as required, in fact I achieved 215% of all my assigned goals.  I typically walked and ran a combined 8-12 miles a day, for the past 9 months, but the last 2 weeks it was bumped up to 12-15 miles daily, and during GOTV, over 20 miles. Four Stop and Go Marathons, on my calibrated pedometer.

I was informed I was the top Campaigner in the State of Ohio, measuring several metrics. Most new voters registered, most doors knocked, most early vote commit cards, most conversations, most volunteers recruited, most volunteer shifts filled, most GOTV shifts filled, and most miles covered. I've been doing this every year since I was 12 years old back in 1975 helping my Mom work on Governor Jimmy Carter's campaign. I've knocked on over 350,000 doors, most of them volunteering for free. It was nice to this year be compensated, and be recognized for the professional I am. I think I inspired many on my team to step it up, and to be their best as well. We had a good number of fantastic people with fantastic productivity. My team alone is responsible for gaining more than 50,000 votes that otherwise would not have existed. All the teams in Ohio accounted for an additional 250,000 votes, which just happens to be the margin of victory in Ohio. And we all know, AS GOES OHIO, SO GOES THE NATION!  No Republican has ever won the Presidency without winning Ohio. We were all determined never to let that happen, including THIS MORMON!

I had a wonderful angle when talking to constituents. I would often say, "I wouldn't vote for Mitt Romney if he were my Ward Bishop!" That line usually got a broad smile and a laugh. I was so proud to see and witness that the vast majority of anti-Mormon bigotry comes from the right. I didn't witness a single individual  that judged me harshly for being a Mormon, or a single Obama supporter that thought of Romney as the standard bearer of the Church. However, had Romney won, I firmly believe he would have brought shame and disgust upon the Church, and done much to Turn Souls from investigating or coming to Church. It was interesting that in no place that Romney has ever lived believes in him or trusts him. Massachusetts is pissed off he lied to them to get himself elected Governor. It's quite clear why he pulled a Sarah Palin, and decided not to run for re-election. Michigan despises him for denigrating the auto industry, and being a Chinese patsy. Even the Salt Lake newspaper endorsed Obama, when they could have remained neutral...that should tell everyone a lot.

To wrap up this post I want to say how much my life has been enriched by this Campaign. THIS CAMPAIGN HAS CHANGED MY LIFE! I am so much a better person because of it. I came out to hundreds of people, all of them openly accepted me, and gave me hugs and affection. I am more affirmed as a transgender woman, as a Transsexual, in fact. I gained so much confidence in myself. I know I can do anything. I know great things and great people are out there for me to discover. I will be knocked down, but I will always get up again, and be thankful and grateful for the experience I had on the Akron Strike team 2012, helping Obama get re-elected. We were the #TipOfTheSpear  and we pulled it off. Election night was among the happiest most euphoric times of my life. I am determined not to let this experience slip through my fingers. I have plans to seek a position on the inauguration committee, and a later job with the Administration or Government.  I AM SO EXITED FOR THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY!!!!!

Life Is Good, LIFE IS GREAT!
Peace Out!  Love To All!
Your Friend, Leah

Part 3: NEW YEARS DAY TALK on; SERVICE AND ENDURING TILL THE END

I'm sorry it has taken me so long to finish typing out my handwritten sermon I gave in Church this past New Years Day. Many new wonderful things have been happening to me, one of them a new job. It only confirms to me the full significance and impact this talk had on my life, and setting me on a new course, that I have been good and ready for, for over 40 years.   I hope most of you will be able to read all three parts of this talk together as I gave them, so that you can feel the same way the congregation did afterward. I would appreciate you leaving comments on how any of this made you feel, both pro and con. Thank you.

PART  THREE:

In Romans 8: 24-27, we read, "...waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.  For we are saved by HOPE:  but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we Hope for that we see not, then we do with patience wait for it.  Likewise, the spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.  And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God."

Our 13th Article of Faith states, "We believe in being honest , true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous and doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul--We believe all things, we HOPE all things, we have endured many things, and HOPE to be able to ENDURE all things.  If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things."

It is with all my heart, I believe it is in service to others we are accomplishing the 13th article. That commitment of benevolence, virtue and doing good to all human beings, without conditions, that we stock up on the hope and change that we need to be able to have the endurance to be our best true selves. It is our best true selves that God wants us to be. Being our best true self is our last best hope to gain all the faith, hope and charity we need to endure all our infirmities, which is the definition of a successful life. A life that will be rewarding with all our hopes and dreams in store. A life in which Jesus will be happy in intercession, and Heavenly Father proud in welcoming home.

Finally, I wish to convey a small scrap of one of the most spectacular instances of hope, faith, optimism and endurance that has ever been recorded.

It is the expedition of Sir Ernest Shackleton, his crew of 27, and the most aptly named ship, "Endurance". Some of you may, by now, know about him and the fantastic challenges he and his crew endured.  There are over two dozen books and many T.V. shows, documentaries, and a couple feature movies, about his voyages. The Endurance expedition bears a short retelling for the purposes of this talk, in that, Sir Ernest Shackleton embodies the very essence of altruistic spirit we are admonished to have. That is to say, he showed us by example how to endure, virtually anything, if we but have faith, and hope, and actively serve others by having others foremost on our minds and effort,  above ourselves.

Shackleton's legacy is simple service, loyalty, love, commitment and endurance. His expedition diary entitled "South" is one of the most astounding accounts of persevering service, against all odds, that has ever been written. Shackleton's 1914-1916 expedition, (keep in mind, this is before radio), was an attempt to cross Antarctica, which had never been done.
[at this point all I wrote was short prompts, because I know the story by heart, I own and have read all two dozen books....I did give this talk with passion and emotion, and I did not look down reading in a monotone voice the whole while....I hope I didn't, but this part ensured that I could connect with the congregation. If you want to know all of what I said, and be more fulfilled, find some of the books yourself, and read them, you'll be glad you did. I teared up and cried several times in the retelling of this story as I always do. I did the same, several other times in this talk, especially reading the song, "People Have The Power". My true feminine nature really blossomed in this talk, and I am truly thankful for that.]

     (prompts only)
A few weeks into the expedition
Endurance stuck in ice flows in the Weddell Sea
Endurance is crushed by sea ice 10 months later
28 men made camp on sea ice flows
5 more months passed
They man-hauled one ton sledges
Stuck on small football field sized ice flow
take 3 lifeboats to Elephant Island
a most God forsaken land with no vegetation
Prayed for guidance
Noted his officers cheery optimism
A Bold Challenge
Sail ramshackle boat, cannibalized from other two
Sail 1000 miles-most inhospitable seas on Earth
faced 100ft waves, near constant hurricane force winds
took 5 cheery optimists with him
left behind 22 on Elephant Island
Landed on wrong side of South Georgia Island
on the south, while the whaling station is on the North side
Must cross never before crossed 12,000 ft Mountain Range
Have crewman nap for 10 minutes
Wake them, telling them they slept for 4 hours
2 1/2 years after ordeal began, they arrived at whaling station
Over the next 8 months, Lead 4 expeditions to attempt Elephant Island
Turned back three times because of storms and ice
4th try, with assistance from the Chilean government....
SIR ERNEST SHACKLETON, THE BOSS, AS HE WAS AFFECTIONATELY CALLED, RESCUED   A-L-L  H-A-N-D-S.  He never lost a man, not ONE.  Sir Ernest Shackleton performed a great service, showing his love, commitment, loyalty, altruism, sacrifice for others, hope and optimism....and he surely ENDURED TILL THE END.

Brothers and Sisters, I hope and pray, that like Sir Ernest Shackleton, we can serve others and endure to the end.

I leave you with this challenge;  to double our service to others in this coming new year, 2012. I also challenge you to bring just one other person with you to a day of service or two. The coming MLK Day of Service would be a wonderful way to start, and I hope all of you will join with me, I have sign-up sheets.

In closing, I leave you with the words of my favorite band, The Moody Blues;  [given in song, singing]

          WHEREVER YOU GO
          WHATEVER YOU DO
          WHATEVER YOU SAY
             SAY----SAY----SAAAAYYYYY
             SAY IT WITH LOVE!!!!

These things I leave with you, In the name of Jesus Christ,  Amen.

I have to say I felt wonderful, engulfed with the Spirit as I gave this talk. A feeling that is with me to this day, more than 8 months later. When Sacrament meeting was over, I was mobbed by seemingly half the congregation, and those that didn't found me later that day or the next week or two. What was most stunning was that so many people wanted copies of my talk. I've felt impressed to ask for copies of other peoples talks before, but I never thought is would happen to me.  Even the Bishop and his counselors commented on how wonderful they thought it was. I think I'll judge that by how long it will be before I'm asked to be a featured speaker again. They seemed sincere though, so did many people I thought felt animosity towards me, including a couple I know to be openly hostile to me, one telling many congregants, "don't be friends with that, Bob _____"

There was an investigator there for his third time, and while going on splits with the missionaries, he told me he was just going through the motions, and that he had already decided on not coming back. He said that my talk perked his ears and got his attention, and he felt something stir in him. He told me, my talk inspired him to give the Church a second chance and continue the lessons, and keep coming to Church. He got baptized a couple months ago.

Another investigator heard it through the grapevine, weeks later about my talk. She came to me asking if she could have a copy, and of course by this time my preparedness insured I had ample copies in my briefcase. I gave her one, and the next week she came right up to me and hugged me, and thanked me for something she never got to hear. She also got baptized.

So many people were touched I can't name them all here. Just as importantly, if not more so, it very much impacted me, and changed me for the better.  This talk was the spark igniting the kindling shining the light on my true self....for now I am full on bonfire mode.

When I retrieved my copy of "SOUTH", by Sir Ernest Shackleton from one of my bookshelves, I uncovered a dusty, forgotten book, I didn't remember ever getting. It is called "The Illustrated Discovery Journal", by Sarah Ban Breathnach. It has some text, but its main point is to prompt you into making collages that reveal who you really are. You are to actually discover your true self!  AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT HAS HAPPENED.  In this case it awakened me to the truth I had tried so hard to conceal for 48 1/2 years!

Page after page, new collage after collage, I was having a ball finding out who I really was. Going through all the sources and magazines I was asked and prompted to use and cutting the things out that revealed me, that I liked or inspired me, or aspired for was time consuming, but it was fun, way more fun than most anything I was doing at the time, and way better than T.V. I still didn't have a computer yet and knew very little about the internet. This journal became MY LIFE!  And it revealed my life, pulling the wool off my eyes.

This Discovery Collage Journal was a decisive factor in my openly accepting myself for who I've always known myself, since I was 4 years old, to be.  That being,  that I AM A GIRL, I AM A WOMAN, I AM A TRANSGENDER WOMAN, I AM A TRANSSEXUAL WOMAN.....I AM HAPPY....I AM PROUD....I AM NOT ASHAMED.....THIS IS TRUTH.....THIS IS WHAT GOD WANTS FOR ME....I MUST ACCEPT THIS....I MUST BEGIN THE COMING OUT PROCESS......I MUST NOT DENY THIS ANYMORE......NO MORE DENIALS!!!

There were some other things that happened to augment my desire to come out of the closet. Namely, lead singer of the band "Against Me", came out as a transgender woman, Laura Jane Grace.....I've temporarily co-opted her new last name as a nod to her courage that inspired me to also come out. My third of three daughters, all shutting me out of their High School Graduations!  I am so sick of feeling like absolute crap for so many years in a row, every June. Well, every other year, as they are spaced two years apart. This last daughter was the last straw. She was my last hope for "Bob", he really needed this. He died, with no hope for being revived, right then and there. I cried my eyes out, while at the same time, my so called, "Bell" was going off.....I am like the perverbial racehorse that is trained to run at the sound of the bell, with only ONE PURPOSE.

My Bell is now going off, I am out of the gate, I'm out of the closet to everyone except my wife and girls and my Bishop. They must be told before long, or I will come up lame with a broken leg, needing to be put down. I am running, I am blossoming, I AM BLASTING OFF............I AM  A  "GO AT THROTTLE UP",  The all-in point in my journey, the point of no safe return.....THUS, THE NAME OF THIS BLOG!     Can You Feel It?

My name is Leanorah-Loreli Shawnamee Grace, Leah-Loreli or just Leah for short. I thank you for reading my blog, and I hope you will join me on this wonderful journey as I continue coming out and begin my transition. I have a long way to go, I must take baby steps, and it wont be easy. I have many infirmities, many barriers, many obstacles, and will face much adversity and afflictions. But I must persevere, I must retain my cheery optimism, my happy go lucky, pollyanna outlook, my faith, hope and charity. It is my hope my wife, my daughters and my Church will all accept me, but I have no way of knowing this until the point of coming out to them. I will always love my wife and honor my temple covenants, and love my children, I will always be their Dad. But come what may, this is happening!

Until next time, this is Commander Leah, singning off, over and out.

p.s.
I welcome all your comments, share similar experiences, what inspired or edified you, what did you disagree with, or turn you off?  Give me advise, I want to be a better person, I don't know everything. I appreciate your time and willingness to learn about me. I hope to post about all aspects of my life, so I hope you will find something you like,

Part 2 : New Years Day Talk on; SERVICE AND ENDURING TO THE END

I hope you are still with me here. I was too tired yesterday to type, and I just got through helping a friend put brakes on their car. And now my T.V. just died. It was a console I've had for 22 years. It was used when I got it, so I got extremely good value from it. I wanted to see Doctor Who tonight, oh well. So, I will get right into more of my main talk in Sacrament on January 1, 2012. The original was handwritten in cursive, as all my talks have been. So this is the first time I'm typing this.

Part 2:

If we fall into the trap of developing a tiered or dichotomous system of treating people, and place conditions on whom we will respect, and whom we will dis-respect, whom we will serve and whom we will cause dis-service, trotting out our bigotries such as homophobia, Islamophobia, and xenophobia, then we bring ourselves out of compliance with God's Commandments. It is not for us to judge who is to be a recipient of our service, our love, our empathy, compassion, charity, generosity, and liberality. It is never correct for any of us to target people for dis-service, denigration, dis-respect, mockery, dis-edification, and myriad negative outcomes resulting from the cause and effect of ones bigotries. And lets make one thind crustal clear right here, right now....Ignorance of the terribly wicked and abhorrant outcomes that ones bigotries cause, does not absolve one of the bigotry perpetrated or acquiesced to, which are sinfulness. Only service, in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, to those we targeted, victimized and offended, can overcome and help unlearn our narrow-minded and exclusivist tendencies. Service is a wonderful thing that can overcome a lot. Service brings us to truly have love for people.

Love all people, everywhere, at all times, are the themes President Hinkley expressed, when in 2004, speaking on providing service, fellowship and love toward others he stated, "We as Latter Day Saints are too cliquish and clannish." He went on to admonish the Saints for being too exclusionary, too inwardly focused, too closed off from other people that don't happen to be of our faith. God wants for us to reach beyond our comfortable habits and relations, and to seek out those in need of service, and to eventually become comfortable and happy about reaching out to others.

First Counselor of the First Presidency, Henry B. Eyring spoke in the last General Conference, in October, that there is a message of encouragement to us, stating, "The Book of Mormon makes the charge plain to us, first we have promised to become charitable, second, we promise to become witnesses of God, thirdly, we promise to endure. It is not a fluke that all three of these promises are directly related to service. Service is a very vital and important promise we make.

Church  Spokesman, Michael Otterman, on October 13, 2010, making an official position statement said,"to belittle, disparage, denigrate or work to the detriment or dis-service to others is wrong." I believe in absolute compliance with this Church Policy, it is wrong for us to ever advocate to withhold rights to others that we ourselves enjoy. Whenever someone trots out the Proclamation on the Family, and uses it as a tool of mass destruction, that is to say, to deny the affirmation tool of positivity for us that it is, to instead twist and pervert it into a hateful tool of mockery of those we otherize, to belittle, disparage, and denigrate others, to make assumptions of negativity what the First Presidency really meant was...this, this, and this is bad and evil, which is not and never will be part of a Proclamation or our Docrine. Such perpetration's and acquiescence's amount to a commission of bigotry, and is unbecoming of a Latter Day Saint. How could any of us ever be edified or served by a document used as a tool of dis-affirmation. The Proclamation and everything about the Gospel and the Restored Church is about positive affirmation and edification to serve one another, in love. Always look for and empower the positive in all we see. It is not for us to judge the negative, and certainly not exude negativity as a Church body, group or individual. We are a happy people, lets prove it in all we do and all we think, and all we espouse forth in our proclaiming. There is nothing happy about dissing others to affirm ourselves, and there is nothing right about it either.

Now, I understand, that hearing all this, having such a rosy way of thinking, such values, such morals, I come across as a bleeding heart liberal!......Well Duh!.....everyone knows I'm Bob, the Liberal....or That Liberal Brother Isaak. It's all true. I wake up every morning of my life, ever more liberal than the day before. Let me show you how much, by reading this poem;  People Have the Power .

I was dreaming, in my dreaming of an aspect bright and far
and my sleeping, it was broken, but my dream, it lingered near
In the from of shining valleys, where the pure air recognized
and my senses newly opened, I awakened to the cry
That the people have the power to redeem the work of fools upon the meek
the graces shower, it's decreed, the people rule
          People Have the Power
          People Have the Power
          People Have the Power
          People Have the Power
Vengeful aspects become a suspect, and bending low, as if to hear
Then the armies ceased advancing, because the people had their ear
Then the shepherds and the soldiers, lay beneath, among the stars
Exchanging visions and laying arms to waste in the dust
In the form of shining valleys, where the pure air recognized
and my senses newly opened, I awakened to the cry
People Have the Power (repeat 3 times)
Where there were deserts, I saw fountains, like cream the waters rise
We strolled there together with none to laugh or criticize
and then the leapard and the lamb lay together, truly bound
I was hoping in my hoping, to recall, what I had found
Well I was Dreaming in my Dreaming, God Knows A Purer View
as I lay down in my sleeping, I commit my dream to you.
People Have the Power (repeat 3 times)
The Power to Dream, to Rule, to Wrestle the Earth From Fools
          It's Decreed, The People Rule
Well it's decreed the People Rule
Listen!.....I believe everything we dream can come to pass through our union
Oh, We can turn the world around, We Can Turn The Earths Revolution
          We Have The Power
          People Have The Power
          People Have The Power
          People Have The Power
The Power To Dream, to Rule, To Wrestle The Earth From Fools
      It's decreed the people rule
      It's decreed the people rule
          We Have the Power
          People Have the Power
          We Have the Power

This poem was turned into a song by Patti Smith. It is my favorite song of all time as you could tell. I have never been able to hear it, read it or sing it without crying. It really speaks to my spirit and deep within my heart. God does know a purer view, but that we should not just give up solving social problems because he isn't here yet. We do have the power and authority to wrestle the Earth from all the fools, who are a dis-service to others, who denigrate others, ostracize and belittle others. Our service to others includes much activism, in calling out the bigots for who and what they are, and to wrestle the world from them, and actively live our faith in love and be building up Zion.

So, now you know that not only am I Liberal, but I am also a Utopian, because I will not acquiesce to the social problem filled dystopia. I am a dreamer, as in the Supertramp song "Logical Song", a radical, a Pollyanna. I embrace and aspire to be such things, I am not ashamed of them.

There was a T.V. show that ran from 1978-1994, called Knots Landing. One of the main characters was Karen MacKenzie. She defended herself in an episode I still remember off the top of my head some 25 years later, "I want to be a Pollyanna", she cried out, "I desire and Like being a Pollyanna. Pollyanna's make the world go 'round. The Pollyanna's among us love and serve others before themselves. Pollyanna's want to make the world a better place. Pollyanna's have the hope and faith to make beneficial change. Heaven can be a Place on Earth because of Pollyanna's." She was such a passionate force for service, faith, hope and Charity for all, I always found myself on her side and I always could relate to her. I could always relate to her best friend Valene too.

A recent term that I feel describes what I have is "Hopium". Yhe combination of Hope and Optimism. Not that Hope and Change isn't working, it is working just fine.....but try Hopium, it will change your life.

It is my hope and desire that we all get a little Hopium, and a desire to love and to serve and to spread the spirit of Christmas throughout the entire New Year.

(and I am going to cut it off here, and the finale will be part three, okay? Okay!)
